It was no accident how it happened.

General Motors Holden’s masterstroke was to convert an English-based, small four-cylinder economy car into the legendary Torana GTR XU-1, the only car which dominated the forest rallies and racing circuits.; The Giant Killer. Then, built its own all-Australian Torana SL/R 5000 with its own 308 V8 engine.

Torana could do it all, its crowning glory was its domination of the one race which mattered most.

From the hey-day of the 1970s when the annual Bathurst Hardie-Ferodo 1,000-kilometre endurance race was regarded as the ultimate arbiter of which car was the best for Australian conditions, one car dominated all others – Torana.

Usually in the hands of one driver, Peter Brock.

Torana and Brock became synonymous with victory, and Bathurst

For half of the 1970s decade (1972, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979) Torana beat all comers at Bathurst and all but one of those in the hands of Peter Brock. But for two hard-luck stories it would also have been Torana/Brock in 1973 and 1974.
