Waters and Percat the winners in Tasmania
Dramatic races in Tasmania result in wins for Cameron Waters and Nick Percat and further twists in the championship.
Cameron Waters and Nick Percat claimed the two race wins at the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint, in an action-packed event at Symmons Plains Raceway.
Waters’ third victory of 2024, and first since Townsville in July, was his first ever at Symmons Plains. Behind Waters in Race 18 was championship leader Will Brown and Bryce Fullwood, his second career podium and best result since 2020.
Brown’s second placing coupled with Chaz Mostert finishing in fourth place means the championship lead at the top is back out to 81 points, with Brown holding the advantage heading into next month’s opening endurance event of the year, the Penrite Oil Sandown 500.
It was heartbreak for Waters’ teammate Thomas Randle, who gifted Waters the race lead on the opening lap and then ran into trouble and penalties after run-ins with both Red Bull drivers.
After a clash with Brown that saw Randle go off into the grass and concede second place, the Mustang driver made a mistake at the hairpin and collided with Broc Feeney while fighting for third place. He was awarded a 15-second penalty and finished the race in 18th position.
In Race 17, Percat held off Mostert for the win. A Matt Stone Racing pitstop masterclass delivered a second win of the season for Percat. Mostert, on an alternate strategy, powered from fifth to second, while pole-sitter Feeney came home in third with Brown recovering to seventh from 16th.
With sprint events out of the way, attention now turns to the Sandown 500 which runs September 13 to 15, with co-drivers such as Bathurst winners Jamie Whincup, Garth Tander, Craig Lowndes and Lee Holdsworth among the field.
