Son of legend to race tribute Mustang
James Moffat will honour father Allan with iconic Mustang livery in Motorcraft Mustang Cup debut
Supercars race winner James Moffat will pay tribute to his legendary father Allan when he contests the opening round of the Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia at Phillip Island later this month.
Moffat will drive a Ford Mustang Dark Horse R featuring a replica of the famous red Coca-Cola-inspired livery worn by Allan Moffat during his dominant Ford Mustang Trans Am campaigns in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The entry will be run by Garry Rogers Motorsport, continuing the long-standing relationship between the team and Moffat that dates back nearly a decade. The event marks the inaugural round of the new one-make Mustang category, which will be staged as part of the Shannons SpeedSeries at Phillip Island on March 25–27.
The tribute livery references Allan Moffat’s Ford Mustang Trans Am, a car gifted to him by Ford that made its Australian debut at the Sandown Southern 60 event in 1969. Backed by Coca-Cola sponsorship, the combination became one of the most successful and recognisable partnerships in Australian touring car history, winning 78 races from 188 starts.
For James Moffat, running the colours in the new category carries both personal and historical significance.
“Running these colours is a good tip of the hat to my dad’s achievements,” Moffat said.
“It’s a look that he is probably most synonymous with and celebrated for.
“To represent that on the track, in a new category that Ford is pushing, was the best way for myself and GRM to honour his legacy.”
Moffat said he was also looking forward to experiencing the new Mustang-based series and the level of competition expected in its debut round.
“By all reports it looks like a fairly solid grid for the first-ever round,” he said.
Among those lining up alongside him will be fellow second-generation racer Jack Perkins, the son of touring car great Larry Perkins, setting up another chapter in a rivalry between two well-known motorsport families.
The Phillip Island event will feature a mix of emerging drivers and experienced racers, with strong backing from Ford expected to play a key role in establishing the Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia as a new pathway category within the country’s motorsport landscape.
For Moffat, the weekend will combine competition with a chance to celebrate a family legacy that remains deeply woven into Australian touring car history.
