Race is on for van Gisbergen’s seat

Speedcafe Newscast ponders ramifications of unhappy champion’s NASCAR plan.

01 August 2023

Disaffected Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen has confirmed he wants to switch to NASCAR in America next year.

Not happy with the Gen3 change, van Gisbergen is plotting his early exit from a two-year contract extension with Triple Eight Race Engineering following his debut win at last month’s Chicago NASCAR street race.

He confirmed his plan to defect to NASCAR after his success at Sydney Motorsport Park on Sunday, his first race win this year since the Perth SuperSprint at the end of April.

The ramifications of SVG’s impending departure are explained in the latest Speedcafe Newscast podcast. Listen here:

SVG’s likely departure creates a race to replace him, although there are no star drivers available.

‘Silly season’ speculation heightened during the Sydney SuperNight at SMP, with a new focus on David Reynolds’ future. Reynolds is no lock to renew at Penrite Racing, linked to a move to Team 18 to replace Scott Pye.

Speedcafe Newscast hears from Reynolds and Team 18 owner Charlie Schwerkolt on what could happen.

There’s also the latest on why Ford teams still aren’t convinced that recent aero and engine tweaks have improved the Mustang’s parity against the dominant Chev Camaro.

As well, Kiwi legend Greg Murphy rates the chances of a Supercars return to NZ and delivers his verdict on Gen3 from behind the wheel.

All this and more in the latest Speedcafe Newscast, hosted by renowned news-breaking motorsport journalist Mark Fogarty.
