PODCAST: Mostert dominates Gold Coast 500

And then there were seven! The first ever Supercars Elimination Final has been run and won on the Gold Coast, and there are now seven drivers left in the hunt for the 2025 Supercars Championship.

WAU Mustang driver Chaz Mostert clean swept the Gold Coast 500, and with Red Bull Racing’s Broc Feeney also locking away a finals berth during Saturday’s 250-kilometre race, there was a real battle on Sunday as eight drivers tried to secure one of the five remaining places left to advance to the Semi Finals at Sandown.

It was always going to be an up hill struggle for Chaz’s WAU teammate Ryan Wood and Dick Johnson Racing’s Brodie Kostecki after both had major issues on Saturday.

Wood struggled following a fuel refilling drama in pitlane during the weekend’s opening 250-kilometre affair and Kostecki didn’t even make the start of the Saturday race after a huge shunt that saw his DJR Mustang removed from the race precinct on Saturday night for an all-nighter back at the DJR Gold Coast workshop and at chassis builder PACE.

Both drivers never really recovered on Sunday, with a cool suit failing for Wood to add even further insult to the situation. Wood and Kostecki were eventually classified ninth and 11^th respectively. This saw them both eliminated from the finals race.

The third driver eliminated was Team 18’s Anton De Pasquale, who was on the wrong side of penalties on both race days – on Saturday for too many kerb strikes, and on Sunday for his part in an incident that saw Blanchard Racing Team’s James Courtney planted in a concrete wall.

Joining Feeney and Mostert as those remaining in the hunt for the title are Bathurst champion Matt Payne, Cam Waters, Will Brown, Kai Allen and Thomas Randle.

The Semi Finals will take place at Melbourne’s Sandown on November 14-16.

In the lead-up to the Gold Coast 500 the 2026 driver silly season continued to play out, with young Super2 driver Jackson Walls being the surprise steerer to score the SCT Transport Mustang drive, which will be prepared by Triple Eight.

Other less surprising announcements saw the expected move of Jack Le Brocq from Erebus back to his former team Matt Stone Racing confirmed, and the appointment of young gun Jobe Stewart into the Erebus seat.

PremiAir Racing also confirmed its driver line-up for next year, with Jayden Ojeda and Declan Fraser getting the nod following James Golding’s move to BRT.

With plenty of drivers – including current series regulars Bryce Fullwood and Richie Stanaway – without a 2026 seat, there are now only a handful of places with question marks.

The second seat at MSR remains vacant, with highly talented third-generation driver Cameron McLeod being mentioned in pitlane whispers as a potential candidate for that drive, as is Zach Bates. Aaron Cameron is also yet to be confirmed at the Blanchard Racing Team.
