PODCAST: Allen keen for Reid Park action
Young gun hoping to continue Darwin form into Townsville this weekend
Supercars are heading to Townsville for round eight of the championship, the penultimate round of the Sprint Cup, this weekend.
Last time out in Darwin Kai Allen impressed with a pair of podiums in his Penrite Racing Mustang – while his teammate Matt Payne also picked up two podiums – and the youngster is keen to do the same again. It’s all in this week’s episode of Supercars Travel Race for the Championship podcast.
“We didn’t really expect that,” said Allen of the Darwin podiums.
“We are only half way through the season and to get podiums this early is unreal. I think the team at Penrite Racing are doing an absolutely unbelievable job… the engineers and the mechanics, everyone in the team has been working tirelessly and doing a nearly perfect job.
“For Matty to get a podium in the first race and for me to back it up in the second race and for us both to get a podium in the last race at Darwin was very cool.
“It goes to show that if you keep working hard and putting the effort in then you will get results.”
And he can’t wait to get to Townsville.
“We go straight into the race on the Friday night, which is a massive unknown,” Allen said.
“We’ll be ready; we will try hard and I can’t wait to carry that momentum on from Darwin. Townsville is one of my favourite tracks so I’m very excited to head back up there to the Reid Park track and if we can roll out a very fast car like what Matty had last year and nail all of the one-percenters I’m sure we can get some good results.”
Supercars drivers take on the States
Meanwhile, a number of Supercars drivers headed to the US last weekend.
Jack Perkins impressed on his NASCAR Xfinity debut on the streets of Chicago, qualifying fifth before being punted out of the race early in stage one. Perkins’ performance will put him in great stead for his second attempt at Portland in late August.
A familiar face, won that race with Kiwi Shane Van Gisbergen winning his second straight Xfinity race in Chicago, after qualifying on pole.
Van Gisbergen swept the weekend, winning the Cup race, while Will Brown’s Cup cameo ended on lap three, after he was caught in a huge pileup that left him nowhere to go after he qualified in 19th.
