Payne and Waters win for Ford in Townsville

Ford rules in Townsville with victories for Tickford Racing’s Cameron Waters and Grove Racing’s Matt Payne.

08 July 2024

Ford enjoyed its best event of the 2024 Supercars season with a double win and podium sweep in Townsville.

Cameron Waters held off former teammate Chaz Mostert to make it a Ford one-two in Race 13, while current Repco Supercars Championship leader Will Brown was third.

Waters started from pole position alongside Mostert, and the pair went door-to-door before Waters finally prevailed, with a late passing move on Mostert with just six laps remaining the decisive pass that decided the victory.

The win was Waters’ second of 2024 after one previous win in Perth, and his 13th career win. It was his third career win in Townsville after two previous SuperSprint victories in 2021.

Rising star Matt Payne returned to winning ways in Race 14, with the Kiwi victorious in a strategy-fuelled race

Payne, who broke through at the VAILO Adelaide 500 last November, put a three-stop strategy to great effect in an 88-lap marathon at Reid Park.

While Ford drivers swept the podium, with Waters and Mostert second and third, it was a seismic day in the championship chase after a lap one crash for Will Brown.

The Triple Eight driver found the fence after a collision with David Reynolds, and nursed his ailing Camaro to 24th and last.

Teammate Broc Feeney finished seventh and slashed Brown’s lead from 141 to 78 points, with Mostert and Waters also gaining valuable ground in the hunt for the 2024 title. Mostert cut the deficit from 270 to 174 points, with Waters now 389 points behind.

Payne’s win made him the seventh different race winner of 2024 and the third different Ford Mustang driver to win a race this year. It was his first in Townsville, making him just the 11th driver to win a race in North Queensland since the debut in 2009.

The 2024 Repco Supercars Championship will resume at the Panasonic Air Conditioning Sydney SuperNight on July 19 to 21.
