Newcastle 500 cancelled for 2024

The Newcastle 500 off the Supercars calendar in 2024.

Supercars looks to have raced on the streets of Newcastle for a final time with city mayor Nuatali Nelmes confirming the event has been scrapped for 2024.

Opposition from the city council had placed doubts on the future of the event moving forward, despite both Supercars and the New South Wales government willing to commit to a one-year deal while the longer term future of the event was discussed.

“An event of this size and scale would have to be supported by local state MPs for it to ever go ahead, so the decision really does rest with the NSW government,” said Nelmes.

“There is no way we’ll be going ahead with an event of that size and scale when your local state representatives don’t support it.”

The Newcastle 500 hosted the Supercars season finale between 2017 and 2019, switching to the start of the season on its return following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2023. But the event faced significant opposition amongst the local community.

Bathurst looks set to replace Newcastle as the 2024 Supercars season opener, with a sprint round on the Mount Panorama Circuit the week after the Supercars-run Bathurst 12 Hour sportscar event.

Supercars made the following statement:

“Supercars held productive discussions with Newcastle City Council earlier this week, regarding the future of the event.

“As part of that discussion, it was mentioned that in the event Newcastle cannot proceed in 2024, alternative options have been explored.

“We express our gratitude to the NSW Government for their continuous support and understanding.

“Supercars would like to confirm its commitment to racing in Newcastle in the future, and conversations in that regard are already underway.

“Regarding the 2024 season opening event, Supercars will provide information when all details are confirmed.”
