Chequered flag set to fall on Sandown

The long-running story of Sandown’s future is, unfortunately, coming to an end. The beloved suburban Melbourne circuit, host of touring car racing classics for almost 60 years, is now on death’s door.

The Sandown 500 is set for at least one more year, celebrating the 60th anniversary of touring car enduros at the Springvale track.

Sandown is the world’s last surviving combined horse and car racing complex, with the circuit running around the turf track.

Despite its age, it has the best spectator facilities of any permanent circuit in the country, including a heritage-listed grandstand
