Erebus Motorsport’s Will Brown has emerged as the favourite to replace Shane van Gisbergen at Triple Eight Race Engineering in 2024.
With van Gisbergen set to depart Triple Eight and Supercars with a year left on his contract to pursue NASCAR opportunities, long-time Erebus driver Brown has seemingly moved into pole position to make the switch to Triple Eight next season.
“I don’t know if I’ll be full-time,” van Gisbergen said recently at Sydney Motorsport Park.
“There’s obviously a lot happening in the background, but I’m not leaving because of this team.
“I love this team and, when I leave, I want to make sure that there’s someone here to replace me that’s going to do a good job in the car.
“You don’t want to leave the team with nothing, and scrambling to find someone.
“A lot of the good drivers here are signed up, so, yeah, I want to leave with the team in a good spot. Hopefully the team has someone soon.”
Triple Eight team principal Jamie Whincup said the team would not stand in van Gisbergen’s way.
“Sitting here right now, of course I’m trying to run the business as well as I possibly can,” said Whincup.
“I need the best drivers, but if any driver, engineer, employee come to me and said, ‘Hey, I wanna, I, my dream is to, to go the other side of the world and do something else,’ then I’m not gonna stand in their way.
“I want to open up opportunities for all my staff.”
While Brown has a contract with Erebus until the end of 2024, it’s believed an agreement has been struck between the driver and teams to pave the way for the Triple Eight move.
