PODCAST: Piano man aiming for next level

Tickford Racing’s Thomas Randle is yet to have his maiden Supercars race victory. While his teammate Cam Waters has had a great start to the 2025 Championship season and sits second on the points table just 34 points behind leader and reigning Champion, Red Bull’s Will Brown, Randle sits ninth, some 190 points further down the ladder.

Randle has shown he has had the pace over the past few seasons to claim that elusive victory, but circumstances have always conspired to ensure that he has never quite been able to stand on the top step of the podium.

However, Randle has proven he is no quitter and is confident a win is around the corner and could even come at next month’s Tasmania Super440 at Symmons Plains.

“I bloody hope so (that’s) what I’m aspiring to achieve,” Randle told Mark Fogarty in this week’s episode of Race for the Championship podcast.

“I’d love to say I’m a race winner in the Supercars Championship. I mean ultimately I want to win the championship, but yeah, I need to get that first win on my belt.

“I’ve had a couple opportunities here and there and … it just hasn’t eventuated, whether it’s been driver error myself or we just haven’t quite nailed the strategy … there’s a lot of things that need to go right to win a race, especially in this category. I’m in my fourth season in the championship, so I’d like to say it’ll be this year. We’ve knocked on the door a few times but it hasn’t happened… maybe it could even be at Symmons Plains. That would be nice.”

Randle believes this season has thrown up plenty of challenges for all teams and drivers with Supercars using new tyres, but Symmons Plains is one of the rounds where the category will use the same rubber it did last year, and Tickford was fast at the Tasmanian circuit in 2024.

“Last year we were quite strong,” Randle explains.

“Cam and I locked out the front row on Sunday and if anything we probably had faster race cars than the Red Bulls.

“Cam won on Sunday. I got into trouble down at the hairpin with Will at first then with (Broc) Feeney later, but I actually thought we had quite a strong package there last year and the good thing is that we’ll be on the same tyre, so fingers crossed we can roll out as strong as we did last year and really put it to the Red Bulls.”

In what can only be described as a captivating interview, Randle also talks to Foges about having as much skill on the piano as he has behind the wheel of a race car, and he also opens up about his battle to beat cancer.
