Greg Murphy recalls his famous ‘Lap of the Gods’ blow by blow
Supercars pundits old enough will always remember where they were when Kiwi ace Greg Murphy set his famous ‘Lap of the Gods’ in the Top Ten Shootout in 2003.
This year marks 21 years since Murph set the lap of 2:06.8594s in the Kmart-sponsored VY Commodore, which was easily the fastest lap in a Supercar around Mt Panorama at the time. In fact, no one had ever dipped below a 2:07 in a Supercar before that amazing day.
The lap is so famous even today that many fans not old enough to have been at the Mountain or watching on television that day have still viewed it countless times on YouTube.
The Top Ten Shootout has been a key part of the Bathurst 1000 weekend for 46 years, adding a many unforgettable moments to the Great Race story.
But Murph’s ‘Lap of the Gods’ continues to resonate with fans today even though it has since been broken by many drivers, including Murph himself when he came out of retirement and co-drove the Boost Commodore wildcard with Ritchie Stanaway in 2022.
