Story launches motorsport memorabilia auction

Dr Ryan Story AM, co-owner and team principal of Dick Johnson Racing, philanthropist and a prominent figure in motorsport, has announced the launch of his highly anticipated Motorsport Memorabilia Auction.

Teaming up with the experts at Donington Auctions, this exciting timed online auction gets underway on Monday 17th June, concluding on Sunday 30th June, and promising a superb showcase of some of motorsport’s finest memorabilia. Every bid and all vendor proceeds of this auction will be donated to and fuel ‘The Ryan Story Worthy Causes Fund’, specifically benefiting Camp Quality and the Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia.

With a target of $200,000, Story is releasing a treasure trove of coveted items that will set hearts racing for collectors and fans alike. From an original autographed Mark Webber driving suit from his Jaguar Formula 1 era to a helmet donned by Webber during his F3000 days, and even the iconic driving suit worn by Supercars Champion Scott McLaughlin in his triumphant 2020 championship run, this auction promises adrenaline-fuelled excitement. Not to mention the set of wheels and tyres that propelled McLaughlin to a record-breaking “Lap of the Gods 2” pole position at the 2017 Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama, which are expected to reach a bidding frenzy, with estimates surpassing $15,000.

Story explained his motivation to create the auction: “Philanthropy has always been a passion of mine, but my time as an ambassador for Camp Quality and the Prostate Cancer Foundation has reaffirmed just how important giving back is. These organisations help ordinary Australians who are facing extraordinary circumstances and seeing first-hand the positive impact they have motivated me to launch the Ryan Story Worthy Causes Fund in 2023.

“When I launched the Worthy Causes Fund last year, I wanted to have a major fundraising effort annually in addition to my own contributions. I’ve kept a number of items that hold significant personal value and with a collection so large that it needs its own warehouse, why not auction the lot for charity!”

The Motorsport Memorabilia Auction will be conducted online, allowing bidders from around the world to participate and contribute to these worthy causes. Interested individuals can register for the auction and preview the collection of memorabilia items on the official auction website: charityauction.org.au.

Join Ryan Story in supporting Camp Quality and Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia through the Motorsport Memorabilia Auction and help make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.

VAILO Adelaide 500’s event and concert manager Brian Gleeson OAM said: “We are so thrilled to have rock icons Cold Chisel perform at the 25th event. We have had many amazing artists perform over the years at the After Race Concerts and this year is set to be the biggest by far.”

The VAILO Adelaide 500 after race concert series is set to open to a bumper post-race crowd, with Crowded House announced as the headline act for Saturday 16 November.

In a first for the event, the Australasian band will take to the stage to perform their hits, igniting music and motorsport fans alike as the event celebrates 25 years.

VAILO Adelaide 500 introduces Sprintcars for 2024

Celebrating the 25th year of Supercars on the streets of Adelaide, the 2024 VAILO Adelaide 500 will feature a suite of new activities at the event, including Sprintcars with the backing of NAPA Auto Parts.

NAPA Auto Parts will be the naming-rights partner of the inaugural NAPA Speedway – Sprintcars in the City – at the 2024 VAILO Adelaide 500 this November.

The NAPA Speedway will be based within the Adelaide street course precinct, allowing traditional fans of the Repco Supercars Championship and the Adelaide event the opportunity to see the 950 horsepower Sprintcars.

NAPA Speedway is being hailed as the biggest announcement in Australian sprintcar history. Never before has a Sprintcar race been held in a CBD before and is likely to see the biggest speedway crowds we’ve ever seen in this country.

The NAPA Speedway will host two nights of explosive sprintcar action, with as many as 40 competitors set to compete in qualify, heats and races on the Thursday and Friday nights of the event.

The VAILO Adelaide 500 has also confirmed that Round 3 of the FOX Australian Supercross Championship will take place at the iconic Adelaide street circuit.

For the Sprintcars, NAPA Auto Parts has also confirmed that Australian international Sprintcar star James McFadden as the first entrant for the Sprintcars in the City at NAPA Speedway.

McFadden, 35, is undoubtably Australia’s leading Sprintcar driver currently racing. In 2024, McFadden is competing in the High Limit Racing series for Roth Motorsports in the USA and currently sits ninth in the standings.

Over the past two Australian summers, McFadden has raced for Hodges Motorsport in the NAPA Auto Parts-supported Sprintcar, competing in the big shows down under, including the Grand Annual Classic and the Australian Sprintcar titles.

McFadden will rejoin Hodges at NAPA Speedway for the inaugural Sprintcars in the City at NAPA Speedway event, to be held as part of the VAILO Adelaide 500 on November 14-17.

“It’s fantastic that Sprintcars are going to be part of the VAILO Adelaide 500 with their own event,” said McFadden.

“I can’t think of a better place to do it – especially on the streets of Adelaide. It’s a great city for sport and motorsport. To be a part of the Adelaide 500 is huge and it’s one of the biggest motorsport events in the world.

“For us to showcase what we do on a stage as big as this is going to be fantastic.

“I grew up going to Speedway City in Adelaide, and I’m excited to come back to the town. I know how great the fans are, and I’m really excited that NAPA has supported this event.

“The South Australian Motorsport Board are going to make it an unbelievable show.

“To have a Speedway built in the middle of the city, in conjunction with the VAILO Adelaide 500, is huge for the sport of speedway. It’s going to be an awesome show. They’ll be a lot of talented drivers and teams, and Sprintcar has such a big following in Australia.

“I’m really excited for it. It is going to be huge for our sport. Huge for Adelaide and huge for NAPA. And I’m coming back home to win this race. Not only for myself, but for NAPA and the fans. It is going to be the biggest stage for Sprintcar racing in Australia.

“To win the race is the ultimate goal. We have the team capable of doing it – the NAPA Auto Parts Hodges Motorsport #5. I won’t be really happy about anything else but winning the race. I’ll be fresh off coming back from America and I’ll be able to hit the ground running.”

Cold Chisel and Crowded House are amongst the musical acts who will perform at the post-race concerts on the Saturday and Sunday, while Stadium Super Trucks will return to the support category bill.

The 2024 VAILO Adelaide 500 will be held on November 14 to 17.

Team 18 locks in endurance pairings

Team 18 has announced its line-up for the 2024 Supercars endurance races with the return of Michael Caruso and Warren Luff to the squad for the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000.

Caruso will partner up with Mark Winterbottom in the #18 DEWALT Racing Chevrolet Camaro for the fourth consecutive year, while Luff will join David Reynolds for the first time in the #20 Tradie Beer Racing Chevrolet Camaro.

Luff has again been released by Walkinshaw Andretti United to join Team 18 for the enduros after last year pairing with Scott Pye. This will mark Luff’s first time co-driving with Reynolds, with the pair entering their 23rd and 17th Great Race start this year respectively.

Caruso and Winterbottom will be among the most experienced lineups on the grid this year, with 39 combined starts to their name, teaming up over the last four seasons.

Caruso and Luff will attend the team’s next test day at Winton Motor Raceway on Thursday 30 May alongside Winterbottom and Reynolds.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to welcome Michael and Warren back as our co-drivers for the 2024 enduros,” said team owner Charlie Schwerkolt.

“Their wealth of experience speaks volumes, and alongside Frosty and Dave, we boast an incredibly formidable lineup for the endurance races.

“Michael’s a familiar face to us now and we’re excited to bring his energy back into the garage. We couldn’t be happier to have Luffy back and thankful for Walkinshaw Andretti United for releasing him to join us for the enduros.

‘Their combined knowledge and expertise will undoubtedly bolster our team’s efforts as we gear up for the endurance battles ahead.

“With the enduros still on the horizon, there’s plenty of preparation ahead. We’ll be getting Michael and Warren behind the wheel at our test day this Thursday to ensure they’re fully integrated with the team as a lot has changed since they were last with us.

“We’re committed to putting our best foot forward come September and having them onboard is a significant step in that direction.”

Ford duo prevail in Perth

Chaz Mostert and Cameron Waters snapped Ford’s winless start to the 2024 Supercars season, claiming the wins in the Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint.

Mostert lost the lead to rookie teammate Ryan Wood off the line in Race 9, and braved a bold strategy call by the team to ultimately lead home championship leader Will Brown to give Walkinshaw Andretti United its first win as a Ford team.

Brown, having taken on four tyres at his stop, was forced to overtake Wood, who was denied a maiden Supercars podium by Waters following a last-lap overtake.

With Broc Feeney fifth, Brown extended his lead from 71 to 103 points heading into Sunday.

Mostert was denied a weekend sweep win after a five-second time penalty for a pitlane infringement handed the final race victory of the event to Waters.

An unsafe release penalty was imposed on Mostert after a close call in pitlane following a pitstop. Mostert had to fight to open a gap by more than five seconds if he was to claim the clean sweep for the weekend.

Waters closed on Mostert in the final laps. Mostert crossed the line first, however with the penalty he officially claimed second with Brown in third.

Brown now holds a 136 point Repco Supercars Championship lead over teammate Feeney heading into the next round on the calendar, next month’s betr Darwin Triple Crown, which runs 14-16 June at Hidden Valley Raceway.

Supercars heads west for battle in Perth

The Repco Supercars Championship heads to Western Australia for the Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint, with championship frontrunners and Triple Eight Race Engineering teammates Will Brown and Broc Feeney leading the way.

After three rounds of the 2024 season, Brown holds a 71-point lead over Feeney heading into this weekend.

The pair exchanged paint last time out in New Zealand, as Feeney tried to fend off Brown before the latter eventually got the better of his teammate and claimed the win.

Both are expected to be at the front again in Perth this weekend, where Supercars will race twice at the Wanneroo Circuit.

Saturday’s Race 9 and Sunday’s Race 10 will both commence at 3:45pm local time and will run to 55 laps. With sunset in Perth at approximately 5:25pm, Supercars will not only race into sunset but into prime-time viewing in eastern states.

The Perth round will also feature the new-for-2024 SuperSprint format, which sees drivers roll out for 60 minutes of practice on Friday, before Saturday and Sunday action kicks off with a 20-minute practice session.

Just five drivers in this year’s field have ever won in Perth previously, Brown and Feeney both recorded race victories in 2023.

Brodie Kostecki is set to race on home soil as reigning champion, with the Erebus Motorsport driver scoring a hat-trick of podiums at last year’s event.

Erebus locks in Kostecki’s sponsor and co-driver

The Erebus Motorsport and TFH Hire Services partnership is set to continue with TFH branding to become a permanent fixture on the #1 car of Brodie Kostecki for the remainder of the 2024 season.

TFH Hire Services signed on as primary partner for the first three rounds of the season as Todd Hazelwood took on driving duties in place of Kostecki. Kostecki made his Supercars return at last month’s Taupō Super400.

Hazelwood will join Kostecki in the #1 Camaro for the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000 endurance events.

“We were thrilled to welcome TFH and the whole TFH Racing team as part of the Erebus family when they jumped on board ahead of Bathurst and their support this year has been invaluable,” said Erebus CEO Barry Ryan.

“Brett (Thomas) and the entire team at TFH are doing so much across many levels of motorsport in this country right now and the level of support TFH Racing is giving to grassroots categories is phenomenal.

“We recognised from the beginning that their primary focus is in grassroots racing. To have the chance to amplify their brand among Supercars fans and witness the growth and everything they are achieving has been remarkable.”

Hazelwood added: “It’s cool to see the association with TFH and Erebus Motorsport continue to grow and develop and we’re all excited for what the future holds.”

Grove Racing confirms endurance line-up

Grove Racing has confirmed a new look to its Supercars endurance line-up with Garth Tander moving across the garage to partner Matt Payne and Dale Wood joining the team alongside Richie Stanaway.

Wood moves to Grove Racing from Brad Jones Racing, rejoining the team that he drove for in its previous guises as Kelly Racing/Nissan Motorsport.

“I feel extremely invigorated this year to be joining this team,” said Wood.

“I think there is a huge amount of excitement and positivity around this team at the moment, and to be a part of it is really motivating. Partnering with Richie, who I’ve always thought was a naturally talented fast guy, is a fantastic opportunity for me and I am excited to play my role and support him on these race weekends.”

Grove Racing CEO Brenton Grove added: “We’re thrilled to welcome Dale to the team. His extensive experience in Supercars, particularly at iconic tracks like Bathurst and Sandown, coupled with his success in Porsche Carrera Cup, made him a standout choice for this year’s enduro campaign. Dale’s race fitness and familiarity with high-pressure racing situations will undoubtedly strengthen our team.

“We’re excited to integrate him with Richie Stanaway and Garth Tander, bringing him in on all elements of the team.” Having another Victorian-based co-driver means we can utilise him for ride days, test sessions, and fully immerse him within the technical aspects of our operation.”

Team principal David Cauchi commented: “We are really pleased to have Dale as part of our team for the endurance campaign of our championship. Dale brings years of experience in endurance racing and is a great personality to have in our team. We look forward to giving him some laps in our Penrite Racing Mustang during our upcoming test days.”
